“Who is in the mood for a little sightseeing trip?” Cope asked as he strode into the hotel’s restaurant. A breakfast buffet had been spread out. The smell of beignets made him feel like he was truly home. Grabbing a plate, he piled several of the sweet treats onto it before grabbing slices of crispy bacon.

“Are we talking about getting to see Bourbon Street, or is this a more personal field trip?” Ronan asked.

“Personal,” The psychics answered together.

Cope’s eyes were on Jude. He could see the suspicious look in his dark eyes. “Christ, I’m glad none of you can read me. Where are we going?” Jude asked before shoveling a forkful of scrambled eggs into his mouth.

“My house,” Cope said cheerily.

“Your house?” Jude’s mouth hung open for a second.

“It’s not really anything we’ve talked about. When I went into hiding, I hired a management company to watch over the house and keep it up for me on the off chance I was able to come home. Once I was settled in Salem with you, I extended my contract with the company and haven’t really given the house a second thought.” Cope had a feeling Jude would be surprised to find out about his property here in New Orleans.

“No, it’s not really anything we ever discussed.” Jude sounded a bit shell-shocked.

“I’m in.” Fitzgibbon was waving from across the table.

“We are too.” Ronan was motioning between himself, Tennyson, and Carson.

“Eat up, everyone. We’ll leave after breakfast.” As Cope sat nibbling on his beignets, he couldn’t help noticing how quiet Jude was. He hadn’t purposely kept his New Orleans house a secret; they’d never really discussed much about his life here. That was all Cope’s fault. The last few years he’d spent here didn’t hold the best memories for him.

“I need to grab something up in the room. I’ll be back in a few minutes and ready to leave.” Jude got up from the table and walked away without saying another word to Cope.

“I think you surprised him,” Ronan said.

Cope looked around the table at all their friends. “New Orleans isn’t something Jude and I have really ever discussed. Partly because I never brought it up, but I also can’t help thinking maybe he didn’t want to know too much about this place.”

“I’m sure you’re right,” Tennyson said. “What are we going out to your house to find?”

At least one person was on his side. “There’s a spare bedroom in the house where I kept all of my parents’ paperwork. I’m hoping there is something in those boxes that might lead us to the answer of who is haunting me.” Cope felt like this was the only thing he had to go on at the moment.

After his mother died, Cope had grabbed what he could from the house. Elizabeth wasn’t even cold in the grave before Buford had people over at the house assessing her jewelry and packing up her clothes. He hadn’t cared so much about material things. What was he going to do with diamond cocktail rings? He’d been after her journals and diaries.
